The Science of Photoaging Indoors

If you sit near a window while working, or spend time in a sunlit room, your skin is absorbing UVA radiation. Standard window glass filters out UVB rays, which is why you won't get a sunburn indoors. However, up to 75% of UVA rays penetrate standard window panes easily.

Over time, this cumulative UVA exposure breaks down the skin's structural support matrix. It activates enzymes called **matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs)** that degrade collagen. This process, known as **photoaging**, is responsible for up to 90% of the visible changes attributed to skin aging.

Decoding Sunscreen Labels: SPF vs. PA

When selecting an indoor sunscreen, make sure it protects against both bands of radiation. Check the label for these rating systems:

  1. Choose lightweight formulas: Fluid chemical sunscreens or light mineral gels are comfortable to wear all day without feeling greasy.
  2. Incorporate antioxidants: Look for sunscreens containing Vitamin C, Vitamin E, or Niacinamide to provide a secondary layer of protection against free radicals.
  3. Don't forget blue light defense: Some mineral sunscreens with iron oxides protect against visible blue light emitted from laptop and phone screens, which can worsen hyperpigmentation (melasma) in darker skin tones.
